🇺🇸 Important Update for Our U.S. Customers: End of the $800 Duty-Free Threshold
Starting August 29, 2025, the United States will end the $800 de minimis exemption.
This means:
✅ All parcels entering the U.S., including those from Japan will be subject to duties and taxes, even if the item value is under $800.
✅ Items shipped by private couriers (FedEx, DHL, UPS, etc.) will be taxed immediately after this date.
✅ Parcels sent through Japan Post (using the international postal network) will first face a temporary flat fee of $80–$200 per item until February 2026, after which full ad valorem duties (percentage of item value) will apply.
✅ Small gift exemptions and personal traveler exemptions will remain, but regular online shopping orders will no longer qualify for tax-free import.
In short: If you shop on Japanese sites and ship to the U.S., you should prepare for higher costs starting late August 2025 no matter which shipping method you choose.
